Exercise: Analyze A Digital Product

For you’re first exercise, we’d like you to get into the mindset of analyzing digital products. Please read the exercise instructions carefully:

  • First, find a digital product you like using and consider successful. This can be any type of application you use regularly.
    • What makes it successful in your opinion?
    • What makes it enjoyable to use, both visually AND functionally?
    • Write down your thoughts or record a video/voice note while you demonstrate the different features and aspects of the product that are successful.
  • Second, identify another digital product that you dislike or have used but abandoned.
    • Explain why you think it is not so successful.
    • Show us the features and aspects of the product that make it unappealing, annoying, or uncomfortable to use.
    • Go beyond the visual aspects of the product – dive deeper into functional aspects.

Have fun with it—the format doesn’t matter. This is not a design task, rather a thoughtful analysis.

Export your analysis to a PDF document or a Word/Google doc and be prepared to discuss with your instructor in your first session.
