Color in Placeholder Text

In form design, we often see helper text inside of form fields that provides additional information to help us complete the form easily.

This type of text usually comes in light to medium shade of gray. It is not very legible and not meant to be. That is why we recommend always having fully-legible, accessibility compliant form field labels in addition to placeholder text.

In some form fields, placeholder text will repeat label text. In other fields, placeholder text will specify the format of certain information, such as birthdate and phone number.

Placeholder text should never be darker than a medium gray because if the color gets too dark, it will look like actual information that has been entered to the form by a user.
